Back to School Season

Back-to-school season is always a busy period for parents. In the US  the schools get a long summer vacation and they get reopened in the month of August-September. This season is known as Back to School After a summer of fun and relaxation, it is finally time for students to sharpen their pencils and put their thinking caps back on!  Getting your children ready for school while figuring out a new routine can be challenging. Nevertheless, this exciting new school year offers new learning, opportunities, experiences, and fun!

Navigating The School System

“Education is the key to unlocking the world, a passport to freedom.” – Oprah Winfrey

Schools seek to build a strong foundation for children. They focus on teaching the core academic subjects: math, English, science, and social studies. In addition, supplementary subjects, for instance, physical education and art, are taught to foster a variety of skills.

That being said, schools lack the resources to cater to each child individually. Specialized classes are usually not offered until the middle or high school levels. Parents often seek to fill this gap through outside-of-school programs or lessons. For example, dance lessons or language-learning academies.

An area of learning our educational systems overlook is STEM learning. Computer science and engineering courses are typically not offered until the later stages of schooling if even offered at all. Studies done by The Hour of Code show that only 51% of high schools offer one or more coding classes. As advancements in technology rapidly increase, it has integrated itself into our everyday lives. From the smart fridges to Google Homes now seen in many houses, complex software completely surrounds us. It is essential for children to understand this technological-based world around them.

It is vital for children to explore different areas of interest during their early stages of life. Although it is never too late to get involved with STEM, starting your child early will give them a major advantage. This critical time in their development has the potential to spark life-long passions that can lead to their future careers.
