FIRST Lego League Challenge 2024-25

Welcome to the SUBMERGED season

During the SUBMERGED℠ Season, FIRST LEGO League teams will use creative thinking and LEGO® technology to explore the layers of the ocean and bring their learnings and ideas to the surface as they “sea” into the future.

Watch this video for more details and see this year’s Challenge Set and Robot Game.

FIRST LEGO League Challenge

The FIRST LEGO League Challenge is a robotics tournament for 9-14-year-old students. Teams collaborate to plan, build, and program a robot. They also conduct research on a topic of their choice and prepare a presentation. After the preparation period, teams participate in a qualifier tournament, where they compete in the robot game and present their findings in the categories of Research, Robot Design, and Core Values. Teams that qualify move on to regional-level competitions, and the successful ones advance to the State Championship.

FIRST sends a set of official competition materials to each registered team at the beginning of the competition season. The teams also receive a list of tasks, called ‘missions’, involving each model on the challenge mat. The robot must be autonomous and has two and a half minutes to complete the missions, which are called the Robot Game.

The competition includes three other judged sections in addition to the Robot Game. The first judging session, Core Values, evaluates how the team works together and incorporates the FIRST LEGO League Core Values, such as inspiration, teamwork, Gracious Professionalism, and Coopertition, into their work. In Robot Design, also known as technical judging, the team showcases their robot’s mechanical design, programming, and strategy. For the Innovation Project, the team must identify a problem related to the year’s competition theme, develop an innovative solution, and deliver a 5-minute presentation to the judging panel.
